KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's soccer team defeated Detroit Mercy 1-0 in overtime on Tuesday evening in its final non-conference match of the 2019 regular season. It was the Broncos first overtime win of the year, improving their record to 10-5-1 overall and 7-3 in road games. WMU has now reached double-digit victories for the third consecutive season under head coach Chad Wiseman.
"It was a hard fought game by both teams tonight," remarked Wiseman. "We had some great chances in the opening 20 minutes, but just couldn't finish one of them off. I'm happy that our guys eventually found a game winning goal."
That game winning goal came seven minutes into the first overtime period from the foot of freshman midfielder Dylan Sing. Sing took possession of a loose ball in the box and tucked it inside the far post for the first goal of his collegiate career.
"Congrats to Dylan on scoring his first collegiate goal in overtime fashion," Wiseman exclaimed. "It's one he will remember for sure."
Western Michigan surpassed the 20 shot mark for the third time this season, with senior midfielder Anthony Bowie recording a team best seven on the night. Bowie has now attempted 139 shots over the course of his career in Kalamazoo, ranking him fourth all-time in program history.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Isaac Walker picked up his fifth shutout of the season to improve to 8-2-1 in net for the Broncos.
"Detroit is always a very difficult team to play against," stated Wiseman. "They defend extremely well and are dangerous on counters and set pieces."
The Broncos are now 4-0 against in-state opponents in 2019 after previous wins against Michigan, Michigan State and Oakland.
"To go 4-0 against Michigan schools and do it all on the road is quite remarkable," Wiseman remarked. "Better yet, it's big time and i'm very proud of these guys for achieving that."
Western Michigan will resume MAC play when they host Bowling Green this Saturday afternoon at the WMU Soccer Complex.
