RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Michelle Shampton scored late in the game for the Cardinals but it wasn't enough, as Ball State (4-12) would fall 2-1 to Virginia Commonwealth (7-8) Sunday afternoon at Carey Street Field.
 
The Rams got off to a strong offensive start in the opening minutes of today's contest. VCU scored its first goal at the 4:56 in the first frame and then added another one in the second quarter to take a 2-0 edge over the Cardinals at intermission.
 
Ball State began to fight its way back into the contest in the third frame after Shampton capitalized off of a rebound to put the ball back into the goal. Shampton's goal marked the seniors fourth of the season and 12th of her career.
 
After that, the fourth period came down to defense, both teams went scoreless but VCU's early scoring in the first half led to the Rams victory.
 
Despite the loss, junior goalkeeper Grace Chavez led all players defensively with 14 saves. Chavez now has 244 saves for her career as a Cardinal.
 
The Ball State field hockey team will wrap up its Mid-American Conference regular season action Friday at the Briner Sports Complex against Appalachian State. The game will be broadcasted live at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN3. The Cardinals will also pay tribute prior to the contest to their seniors.
 
Ohio State 4, Kent State 0

KENT, Ohio- The Kent State University field hockey (10-7, 5-0) team dropped a 4-0 decision to Ohio State on Sunday afternoon at Murphy-Mellis Field.

Junior Clara Rodriguez Seto led the offensive efforts for Kent State with three shots, two of which were on target, followed by freshman Maria Cambra Soler who fired off two shots.

The Buckeyes led in shots (18-6), shots on goal (11-4), and penalty corners (8-3). Senior goalkeeper Mary Crumlish registered seven saves for the Flashes.

Kent State returns to action for its season finale on Saturday, Nov. 2 as the Flashes host Longwood at noon. Saturday's game will serve as senior day as Kent State will honor its seven seniors before the game.

OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University field hockey team (10-7, 4-1 MAC) beat UC Davis in a shootout on Sunday by a 2-1 margin on Myaamia Heritage Day. For more information on the Myaamia Tribe, go to www.MiamiOH.edu/MTR.

Miami started quickly, earning a penalty corner in the first minute of play. After saves on the first two resulting shots from Kirsten McNeil and Marie Görner, Neely Lochmoeller scored her first goal of the season by tipping the ball out of the air twice and into the cage.

The RedHawks put together another sequence of three-straight shots in the fourth minute of play before earning a second penalty corner but neither resulting shot made it into the cage.

After one quarter, Miami had a 9-0 lead in shots and all three penalty corners in the contest.

The first shot of the second quarter didn't come until midway through the quarter as McNeil sent one wide.

UC Davis earned its first penalty corner in the 26th minute of play, putting the resulting shot wide.

Mia Gordon closed the second quarter with a shot on goal as Miami took a 1-0 lead into the half and a 12-1 advantage in shots.

UC Davis evened the score in the 34th minute on the only shot of the third quarter after getting around Isabelle Perese.

The Aggies earned back-to-back penalty corners to start the fourth quarter but a save from Perese and a block in front kept the game tied.

Miami gained momentum with four penalty corners midway through the fourth quarter but the teams remained tied at one at the end of regulation. After 60 minutes of play, Miami had the 18-4 lead in shots and the 7-3 lead in penalty corners.

The RedHawks took all five shots in the first overtime and earned three penalty corners but Miami was unable to score and the game required a second overtime.
Each team recorded four shots and earned two penalty corner chances in the second overtime but Miami went to a shootout in its second-straight game.

In the shootout, each team capitalized in the first round with Devi Slobbe shooting for Miami. Görner put Miami up 2-1 in the third round after Perese made two stops. UC Davis evened the score at two in the fourth round. After the Aggies took a 3-2 lead in the fifth round, Noor Breedijk earned a penalty stroke on her attempt. Leonor Berlie converted the penalty stroke to force a sixth round. Görner once again put the ball in the cage and gave Miami the lead. Perese stopped the final attempt from UC Davis to win the game.

As a team, Miami outshot UC Davis 27-8 with Berlie and Allie Grace Joyner each taking a game-high five shots. The RedHawks led in shots on goal 14-4 and penalty corners 12-5. Perese made three saves during field play.

Miami wraps up the regular season against Central Michigan on Saturday at 11 a.m. with senior and alumnae day.
 
Wake Forest 5, App State 0

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Appalachian State University field hockey suffered a 5-0 defeat to No. 20 Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.
 
App State (9-7, 1-4 MAC) trailed by just a single goal entering the break, allowing only five shot attempts in the first half to the Demon Deacons (8-9).
 
Sophomore Friederike Stegen delivered one of Appalachian's best chances on the afternoon in the third period, darting through the middle of the circle and blasting a shot off the right glove of the Wake Forest goalkeeper.
 
The Mountaineers also earned a penalty corner in the fourth quarter after an original shot on goal from sophomore Sydney Lee. Junior Meghan Smart fired a shot on goal on the ensuing penalty corner attempt.
 
App State tallied four shots on goal, comprising attempts from Stegen, Lee, Smart and freshman Carli Ciocco.
 
The Deacons grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute with a goal off a penalty corner. Wake Forest tallied five penalty corner attempts in the first 30 minutes.
 
The Deacons extended their lead to 2-0 just a minute into the second half with a penalty stroke score from Alexis Grippo. Wake Forest then tacked on three goals in the final 16 minutes to push its lead to 5-0.
 
App State finishes its 2019 nonconference schedule with an 8-3 record, winning its first six games against nonconference opponents.
 
The Mountaineers conclude their regular-season slate at Ball State (4-12, 2-3 MAC) on Friday. Friday's Mid-American Conference matchup is set to begin at 3 p.m.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Central Michigan field hockey dropped a 3-0 nonconference decision to Michigan State on Sunday at the Spartans' Ralph Young Field.
 
How It Happened
MSU broke the ice with a goal midway through the second quarter.
 
"We put together a decent first quarter and then kind of just fell apart after that," CMU coach Catherine Ostoich said. "We definitely held our own, but could've put up a better performance."
 
The Spartans, who outshot the Chippewas, 36-4, led 2-0 at halftime, and then got an insurance goal early in the third quarter.
