MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Close, again.
Indiana scored three consecutive goals on Friday in handing Central Michigan a 3-2 nonconference field hockey loss at Cristy Freese Field.
The Chippewas (2-14) play a nonleaguer on Sunday (2 p.m.) at Michigan State.
How It Happened
Callie Quinn scored her first goal of the season less than two minutes into the game to put CMU in front, before Indiana (5-11) tied it with a goal in the 23rd minute.
The Hoosiers went ahead, 2-1, on a goal just 18 seconds into the second half, and then upped their lead to 3-1 13 minutes later.
CMU freshman Rachel Ruttenberg scored her first collegiate goal, unassisted, to draw the Chippewas to 3-2 in the fourth quarter. Neve Dibley assisted on Quinn's goal.
Coach Catherine Ostoich
"We started off well, but we couldn't put together the full 60 minutes," Ostoich said. "We came out really, really strong which was awesome. That first quarter we played some really good hockey; we pressured, got a goal off of it, and then I think we got comfortable and kind of sat back and let them back in the game. We had a final push; it was just a little too late.
"We've got to go back, have a good practice (on Saturday), work out a couple of kinks. And get right back at it on Sunday and hope for a better result."
In Goal
Abigail Ebersole made 12 saves in goal for the Chippewas.
Senior Day
It was the final home game for four Chippewa seniors: Jasmine Banks, Georgina Minta, Sarah Mesko and Ebersole.
"Obviously we really wanted it for our seniors," Ostoich said. "We've got four great seniors and there was a lot of emotion in the locker room before the game and there's a lot of emotions after the game. They have paved the way for a lot of the future student-athletes here and I think they are really doing their part in pushing this program to be better.
"You really kind of wanted it for them and it's tough because we're changing the culture. At the end of the day we've got to keep working for each other."
