Woods Named to Cheryl Miller Watch List

DEKALB, Ill. – Redshirt-Senior Courtney Woods (Brisbane, Australia/St. Margaret's) has been named to the watch list for the 2020 Cheryl Miller Award, announced on Wednesday by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.

The award, named after three-time Naismith Player of the Year and Class of 1995 Hall of Famer Cheryl Miller, recognizes the top small forwards in NCAA Division I women's college basketball.

Woods averaged 20.1 points per game in seven games last season before a season-ending injury cut her year short. She was named Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week twice last season. Woods scored at least 25 points in a game three times, including a 38-point, 12-rebound effort in NIU's season-opening win over Yale in the Preseason WNIT.

She led the Mid-American Conference in scoring for the 2017-18 campaign at 22.1 points per game, which earned her a spot on the All-MAC First Team. It was the third-best points per game average in a single season in NIU women's basketball history. Woods had six 30-point games in the 2017-18 season, including a pair of career-high 39-point efforts against Western Illinois and Kent State. She enters this season eighth on the NIU career scoring chart with 1,661 points and second all-time at NIU with 260 made three-pointers. Woods enters 2019 needing 19 threes to pass Kylie York to become the Huskies' all-time leading three-point shooter.

The winner of the 2020 Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award will be presented at The College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy's in Los Angeles, CA on Friday, April 10, 2020, along with the other four members of the Women's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award, the Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard Award, the Katrina McClain Power Forward Award, and the Lisa Leslie Center Award, in addition to the Men's Starting Five.

The Huskies host Judson University for an exhibition at the Convocation Center on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m., and open the regular season at home against Harvard on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 11 a.m. for Education Day.
