OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University field hockey team (8-7, 3-1 MAC) beat Longwood by a 4-2 margin on cancer awareness day at the Miami Field Hockey Complex on Friday.
The Lancers earned the first penalty corner of the game in the third minute of play but Isabelle Perese stopped the resulting shot. The RedHawks took the other three shots of the first quarter with the final one being on target from Leonor Berlie on a penalty corner chance.
Miami got onto the scoreboard first in the second minute of the second quarter. Berlie scored her 10th of the season on a direct penalty corner insert from Noor Breedijk and Kirsten McNeil. The RedHawks earned the penalty corner as Kenzie Peterson took the ball into the circle and had her shot blocked by a defender's foot.
Perese recorded a second save on the Lancers' lone shot of the second quarter during the 22nd minute of play to preserve a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
Miami opened up the game with three goals in the third quarter.
In the 34th minute, Allie Grace Joyner scored her seventh goal of the season off the rebound as Gabby Luxardo had the initial shot that was turned aside by Katie Wyman.
The RedHawks struck again in the 38th minute of play as Mia Gordon deflected a ball from Lexie Nugent into the cage for her second goal of the season.
Just a minute later, Gordon had the ball inside the circle one-on-one with Wyman. Miami was awarded a penalty stroke after Wyman took Gordon's feet out from under her without making contact with the ball. Berlie made the penalty stroke count for her second goal of the game and 11th of the season as she continues to lead the MAC in scoring.
Berlie had another shot stopped by Wyman before the third quarter ended with Miami up 4-0.
Perese made her third save of the game before Longwood got onto the scoreboard with a deflection goal with five minutes to play. The Lancers would score one more to cap the game's scoring at 4-2 with a minute to play.
Berlie led the Miami offense with four shots, all on target, while Perese made four saves. The RedHawks led the game 10-7 in shots, 7-6 in shots on goal and 3-2 in penalty corners.
Miami continues conference play at Ohio next Friday at 1 p.m. with its final road game of the season.

ATHENS -- The Ohio field hockey team (7-5, 4-1) continued their MAC schedule with a 3-0 win over Ball State at Pruitt Field on Friday, Oct. 18.
The Bobcats returned home from a 1-1 road trip in the state of Michigan, dropping a heartbreaker to Michigan State, 1-0, and routing Central Michigan, 6-1. With a win, Ohio would improve to 4-1 in the MAC, and set up a crucial match against Miami next weekend.
Redshirt sophomore Tayla Hansen (Levin, New Zealand), in her first start of the season, got the scoring started when she pushed her third goal of the season past Ball State's goalkeeper, assisted by junior Emma Spinetto (Louisville, Ky.). In the second period, the defense shined for both squads, allowing only one shot on goal apiece for each team, sending the Bobcats into half with the 1-0 advantage.
