Akron 3, Georgia Southern 2 // Box Score
The University of Akron volleyball team defeated Georgia Southern 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-11) in its opening match of the Wake Forest Invitational, Friday evening in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Zips improved to 5-2, while Georgia Southern fell to 1-7. Akron is now 3-0 in five-set matches this season.

The Ball State women's volleyball team opened play in the Ball State Active Ankle Challenge with a loss to Northern Iowa, as the Panthers (3-4) pulled away over the final two sets for a 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-13, 25-19) victory Friday morning in Worthen Arena.

The Ball State women's volleyball team used a suffocating defense to score a straight set victory over North Dakota State in Friday's evening match of the Ball State Active Ankle Challenge in Worthen Arena. In improving to 5-3 on the year, and 1-1 in its home tournament, the Cardinals defense limited the Bison (2-7) offense to a season-low -.018 (23-25-114) attack percentage in a 3-0 (25-10, 25-21, 25-16) victory

The University at Buffalo volleyball team won the opening set on Friday evening, but the Bulls were unable to come away with the upset of Big Ten foe Northwestern as the Wildcats came away with a 3-1 win in the opening match of the Arkansas Classic. Northwestern took the contest 22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-21 as the Wildcats outhit the Bulls, .248 to .210.

The Central Michigan volleyball team dropped two matches on Friday at the Sycamore Invitational, hosted by Indiana State. The Chippewas slipped to 2-6 on the season. CMU fell to Green Bay 25-16, 25-23, 25-13 and to Saint Louis 25-17, 25-23, 25-13. Central Michigan will round out the invitational on Saturday (noon) against the host Sycamores.

The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team kicked off its weekend with a convincing 3-0 sweep of Norfolk State University, Friday, Sept. 7, at the William and Mary Colonial Classic. The Eagles cruised from the get-go, turning aside the Spartans 25-9, 25-5, 25-11 for their most lopsided win of the season. Eastern hit a modern-era record .430, while Norfolk State turned in a -.080 mark. EMU dominated in kills, 43 to 12, digs, 51 to 32, assists, 40 to 11, and service aces, seven to one.

A valiant effort fell just short as Kent State lost to Rider, 3-2 (20-25, 16-25, 25-5, 30-28, 13-15), in the first match at the La Salle Invitational on Friday. Senior Amy Kober nearly doubled her previous career-high with a match-high 19 kills on a .419 hitting percentage to lead the comeback effort. Redshirt freshman Alex Haffner had her best match as a Golden Flash with 42 assists and 16 digs. Freshman Kathryn Ellison posted 12 kills and 10 digs for her fourth double-double.

The Miami University volleyball team got a trio of strong offensive performances as it took a 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-18) win over Chattanooga to open play the Holiday Inn - University Plaza Invitational on Friday. The RedHawks improve to 6-2 on the season, while the Mocs fall to 4-5. Miami only made 12 attack errors the entire match and hit .302 as a team. It was led by freshman outside hitter Gaby Harper who had 12 kills against only one error for a .458 attack percentage. Senior right side hitter Stela Kukoc also had 12 kills against two errors for a .400 attack percentage. Right behind them was freshman middle hitter Corinne Jemison with a career-high 11 kills. She had a .444 attack percentage for the match.

The Northern Illinois University volleyball team split its two matches at the Hampton Inn Bama Bash at the University of Alabama on Friday. The Huskies earned a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-21) win over Marshall Friday night after dropping a 3-0 (22-25, 29-31, 19-25) loss to Georgia Tech earlier in the day.

The University of Toledo women's volleyball team fell to Morehead State on Friday night, 3-1, in its first home match of the season. After tying the match at 1-1, the Rockets dropped the final two sets to end up on the wrong end of Friday's decision. Chloee Kleespies recorded a team-high 15 kills while Zoe Birnbrich added 11. Carly Townsend provided 41 assists for the Midnight Blue and Gold while both Maurissa Leonard(27) and Rhyen Neal (10) cracked double digits in digs. Alexis Falzone had a good night as well, hitting .304 with nine kills and four block assists.

On day one of the Delta Hotel by Marriott Kalamazoo Conference Center Tournament, Western Michigan volleyball split its pair of matches sweeping Milwaukee (25-22, 25-18, 25-19) in the morning before falling to Loyola-Chicago in three sets (22-25, 20-25, 24-26) in the nightcap. On the day WMU as a team hit .271 while holding its opponents to a .246 attack percentage. Junior Kate Carey in two matches registered 23 kills, averaging 3.83 per set to rank second on the team. Reining MAC West Offensive Player of the Week Rachel Bontrager led the Broncos with 28 kills, averaging 4.67 per set.
