Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Emily Kelly, Buffalo
Goalkeeper, Freshman, Wilson, NY (Wilson)
Freshman goalkeeper Emily Kelly continued her strong play between the pipes for the Bulls this weekend as she was able to preserve a pair of clean sheets as UB moved to 3-1-0 on the year. Kelly finished off her weekend not allowing a goal while making 13 saves across 180 minutes of work to guide Buffalo to their third straight road shutout victory. On Friday night, Kelly was on fire for the Bulls as she was able to hold a potent Cornell attack in check as she made a career-high nine saves in her second career shutout. On Sunday, Kelly stepped up and made four big stops as the Bulls cruised to a 2-0 win over Albany. Kelly hasn't allowed a goal since the first half of the season opening loss at St. John's. The 328:40 minute shutout streak for the Bulls keeper marks the second longest streak in UB history and the longest since 2014 when UB won the MAC Tournament Championship. ON the year, Kelly owns a 3-1-0 record with a 0.75 goals-against average while making 22 saves.
Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Sydney Worthy, University of Akron
Forward, Freshman, Groveport, Ohio
A big weekend for freshman Sydney Worthy as she helped lead Akron to a 1-0-1 record. Against Youngstown State, the freshman forward went on to score her first career goal against the Penguins, however, that was not all she would do. Worthy scored three unanswered goals in a span of 20 minutes to earn her first career hat trick and is now tied for first place in Akron program history for most goals in a single contest. On the weekend, Worthy tallied six shots, four shots on goal, three goals, and six points.
Other Defensive Nominees
Tristin Stuteville, Ball State
Goalkeeper,Senior, Kansas City, MO. (Platte County)
Tristin Stuteville continued her dominance in goal for Ball State with her second-consecutive clean sheet of the year. The fifth-year senior faced five shots against College of Charleston and saved all of them. Four of those shots came in the first half while Charleston was in the attacking third for a good portion of the time. Stuteville's performance allowed her team to build a three-goal lead and eventually hang on for the shutout victory. The Kansas City native's play was solid enough to allow true freshman Alex DeRuvo to close out the final-nine minutes of the match.
Lydia Brosnahan, Miami
Defender, Junior, Highland Park, Ill. (Lake Forest Academy)
Lydia Brosnahan did a little bit of everything to help the the RedHawks go a perfect 2-0 last weekend. On Friday, Brosnahan logged all 90 minutes on the pitch and anchored a defense that allowed just six shot attempts (only one on goal) in a 1-0 victory over Illinois State. The junior defender once again played all 90 minutes against Evansville on Sunday, where she jumpstarted Miami's comeback efforts by heading home her first goal of the season in the 51st minute and helped the RedHawk defense stand tall in an eventual 2-1 win over the Purple Aces.
Sydney Malham, Ohio
Goalkeeper, Sophomore, Nashville, Tenn. / Franklin Road Academy
Sophomore goalie Sydney Malham picked up another victory for the Bobcats over the weekend. Malham got the start on Sunday (Sept. 2) against Marshall, playing all 90 minutes of the 3-1 victory. Malham allowed one goal, on three total shots on goal, while making two saves.
Other Offensive Nominees
Bailey Korhorn, Western Michigan
Forward, Sophomore, Grand Rapids, Mich.
Bailey Korhorn netted her team-leading this goal of the season and second game-wining goal of the year as Western Michigan defeated Oakland 1-0. The win was WMU’s fourth of the season and first on the road.
Shannon Magnan, Central Michigan
M/F, Senior Brighton, Mich. (Brighton)
Senior midfielder Shannon Magnan scored one goal and triggered another scoring play to lead Central Michigan at the Hawkeye Invitational this weekend. Against host Iowa on Friday, Magnan played in a corner kick that her sister, Sheila, would eventually put into net. On Sunday against Northern Iowa, Magnan scored her second goal of the season to give the Chippewas a 1-0 lead at the 18:01 mark of the first half. For her standout play, Magnan was named to the all-tournament team of the Hawkeye Invitational. Magnan is tied for the team lead with six points (2 goals, 2 assists).
Tatiana Mason, Ball State
Midfielder , Freshman, Ann Arbor, Mich (Skyline)
Tatiana Mason scored her second goal of the season in Ball State's 3-0 route of College of Charleston. The true freshman got off two shots in the match and put both of them on goal. After playing a scoreless first half, the freshman from Ann Arbor, Mich. headed in her teammate's cross for the first of three goals in an 18-minute span.
Mason took over as the top point scorer for the Cardinals on the season with her performance against a solid Charleston team that had played power-five opponents South Carolina and Wake Forest down to the final minuets before falling. As a freshman, Mason continues to lead an experienced group of Ball State attackers this year.
Jordan King, Miami
Midfielder, Freshman, Elgin, Ill. (Burlington Central)
Jordan King was a dynamic force on set pieces for the RedHawks in their perfect 2-0 weekend. King assisted on two of Miami's three tallies for the week, both of which were primary helpers on corner kick services. On Friday, King's play in found the head of freshman Chloe Masys for her first collegiate goal, breaking a scoreless tie in the 77th minute and proving the difference maker in a 1-0 win over Illinois State. King was at it again on Sunday, serving a corner kick to the waiting head of Lydia Brosnahan to tie the score against Evansville, helping the RedHawks post an eventual 2-1 victory over the Purple Aces. Through five matches, King leads Miami with three assists and her three points also tie for the team lead.
Sabrina McNeill, Eastern Michigan
Midfielder, Redshirt sophomore Whitby, Ontario (Henry Street)
Redshirt sophomore Sabrina McNeill continued to cause opposing problems this weekend, leading Eastern Michigan University's soccer team to a 2-0 weekend, Aug. 31-Sept. 2. McNeill played a role in each of Eastern Michigan's game-winning goals, assisting on one and scoring the other. Against Creighton, McNeill's free kick set up Tessa Osborne for the game-winner in the 90th minute to give EMU a 2-1 win. Then, Sunday McNeill found the back of the net herself, netting the Eagles' winning strike in the fourth minute. With points in each of this weekend's games, McNeill's point streak is up to three straight matches. For the season, McNeill has scored two goals and added two assists, matching her total from a season ago. She also leads the category in both categories."
Carissima Cutrona, Buffalo
Forward, Senior, Williamsville, NY (Williamsville South)
Senior forward Carissima Cutrona had another strong weekend to lead the Bulls to their first perfect 2-0 road weekend of the season as they picked up a pair of shutout victories over Cornell and Albany. The lethal scorer finished off her weekend with three goals, one assist and seven points to lead the Bulls to their third straight road victory. She also netted both game-winning goals for the Bulls as she now has potted nine career game-winners for the white and blue. On Friday night, Cutrona was able to net the opening goal of the match and she later assisted on Marcy Barberic's first goal of the season. On Sunday afternoon at Albany, Cutrona was all over the field for the Bulls as she was able to net both goals in UB's 2-0 road blanking of the Great Danes. For her career, Cutrona has now recorded 23 goals which moves her into a tie for 8th place on the Bulls all-time scoring charts.
Sarina Dirrig, Ohio
MF, Sophomore, Powell, Ohio / Olentangy Liberty
Dirrig helped lead the way for the Bobcats over the weekend. Overall, the sophomore played in 65 minutes and scored her first two career goals and registered four points, helping the Bobcats to a 1-1 weekend. She was effective, scoring two goals on two shots, registering a 1.000 shot and shot on goal percentage. Dirrig capped off the weekend by scoring the game-winning goal on Sunday.
On Friday, Aug. 31 against NKU, Sirrig would score her first career goal in the 78th minute. With the Bobcats’ trailing 2-1, Dirrig would catch a deflected ball from a defender right in front of the net, firing it past the keeper to tie the game at 2-2 with just over 20 minutes to go in regulation. Overall, Dirrig scored one goal on one shot in 32 minutes off the bench.
Dirrig was right back at it on Sunday, Sept. 2 against Marshall, when, once again with the game tied at 1-1 late in the second half, she would come up clutch. In the 76th minute, Dirrig would once again be in front of the net at the right time as she received the ball and fired it to the left of the diving keeper, giving the Bobcats the late 2-1 lead. Ohio would add one more goal and take the game by the final, 3-1. Overall, Dirrig scored one goal on one shot in 33 minutes on the pitch.
