FARMVILLE, Virginia – The Kent State University field hockey team (3-9, 1-1 MAC) picked up its first Mid-American Conference win of the season in a double overtime thriller against Longwood (7-3, 2-1 MAC) in Farmville, Va. Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Emma Bressler came up with the game winner in the 86th minute, assisted by senior Jessica Apelt, who also notched two goals on the day. 

The Flashes struck first in the 17th minute of play on a goal by Apelt. Freshman Helena Cambra Soler picked up the assist as she fed the ball on a long pass to Apelt. The Flashes held the 1-0 lead through the first half.

Coming out of the break, the Lancers tied the score, 1-1 in the 40th minute with a goal shot from long range by Sofia Defeo. The Flashes responded minutes later with Apelt's second goal of the day in the 42nd minute. Apelt found the ball in traffic in front of the net following a penalty corner and skipped it past the goalkeeper to take a 2-1 lead. 

The score remained until the 66th minute, when Longwood tied the score at 2-2 in the final minutes of regulation. Olivia Wawrzyniak scored on a penalty corner as Luna Lopez and Charlotte Wilm recorded the assists.

A defensive battle ensued following the regulation buzzer. Only two shots were taken in the first overtime period, both by Longwood and well defended by the Flashes. The game was taken into the second overtime period before Bressler fired the game-winning goal past the diving goalkeeper in the 86th minute. 

Offensively, the Flashes were led by Apelt, tallying 2 goals and one assist on the day. In the cage, junior Mary Crumlish recorded 6 saves on 15 shots against for the Flashes.

The Flashes will return to Murphy-Mellis Field next Sunday, October 7 to take on Central Michigan at 11:00 a.m.

Philadelphia, Pa. –  The Bobcats fall short at Drexel losing the match with a score of 5-1.

The Bobcats gave up one goal in the first half but matched the score with a goal of their own in the first five minutes of the second half. The Dragons would respond with four goals before the game ended.

Ohio had one goal by sophomore defender Leah Warren (Hamilton, New Zealand) assisted by senior forward Emma Eggleston (Houston, Texas). Drexel would see five goals from five different Dragon athletes.

Senior goalkeeper Alex Pennington (Easton, Pa.) made three saves.
Ohio Field Hockey will stay on the road for their next match up.

The Bobcats will meet up with Ball State on Friday (Oct. 5) at 3 p.m. EST in Muncie, Indiana.

BOONE, N.C. -- Appalachian State University field hockey (4-8, 0-3 MAC) dropped a home contest to No. 4 Duke Sunday afternoon. 

The Mountaineers wore gold shoelaces during Sunday's game to support the Go4TheGoal Foundation, which is an organization dedicated to supporting children who are battling cancer. 

A high-powered Blue Devils' team came into Sunday's game 8-3 with seven wins over ranked opponents. Sunday's victory at Adcock Field marked Duke's sixth victory in seven games, including three wins over top-15 opponents during that span.

Appalachian applied pressure throughout the first half, earning five penalty corners. Sophomore Veerle Van Heertum had Appalachian's best goal-scoring opportunity off of a first-half penalty corner, but Duke's Sammi Steele made a diving stop to save the goal.

Redshirt-freshman Madison Nuckols made her second-straight start in goal for Appalachian. Nuckols posted three saves after facing 13 total shots from the Blue Devils. In the second half, junior Rachel Gaines checked in for Nuckols and made six saves.

Van Heertum led Appalachian with two shots, one of which was on target. Junior Melissa Nobile also recorded a shot on target in the second half.

The Blue Devils' Olivia Sahaydak netted a hat trick in Duke's 8-0 victory.

Appalachian closes out its season-long home stand Friday against St. Francis at 7 p.m.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Fresh off its first win of the season Friday versus Appalachian State, the Ball State field hockey team held the nation's top team scoreless for the first 2:23 before eventually suffering a 9-0 loss at North Carolina Sunday.
 
The Cardinals (1-9), who managed two shots and a penalty corner on the day, were led by sophomore goalkeeper Grace Chavez with nine saves.  The Tar Heels (11-0) scored the game's first goal at the 2:24 mark, which came from UNC's Catherine Hayden.  North Carolina tallied eight more over the final 67:36 of play to secure the victory.
 
Ball State will return to Muncie to host Louisville Wednesday, Oct. 3 at the Briner Sports Complex.  The contest is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. ET.  The game between the two Cardinals can be viewed live on ESPN+.
