ATHENS, Ohio—After an impressive display of offense, the Ohio field hockey team (4-4, 2-0) defeated the Central Michigan (1-11, 0-2) 3-1.

The Bobcats pulled ahead early with sophomore midfielder Jillian Shive (Lebanon, Ohio) scoring in the eighth minute of the game with an assist from Tayla Hansen(Levin, New Zealand).

For the majority of the first half, the Bobcats kept the ball near the Chippewas' goal, taking 15 shots in comparison to Central Michigan's two. With three penalty corners in 10 minutes, the Bobcats were putting pressure on the Chippewas' defense.

"Part of our game plan was composure and possession and just trying to keep the ball as much as possible," said head coach Ali Johnstone. "I preach possession because obviously if you have possession, the other team has less chances to score, but today I think we had really good vision. We looked for the passes before we received it and we were able to find each other a little bit better and find the holes so we could run onto the ball."

This pressure paid off. In the 20th minute, Ohio scored again. This time, junior forward Karynne Baker (Falls Church, Va.) took the shot and sophomore defender Claire Buckey(Powell, Ohio) assisted.

In the second half, Central Michigan's defense regrouped, cutting down Ohio's shots to three in the remaining 35 minutes. In the 65th minute during a corner, Central Michigan's sophomore midfielder Callie Quinn scores for the Chippewas.

Ohio fought back immediately, two penalty corners less than two minutes after the Chippewas. A hard shot from sophomore defender Leah Warren (Hamilton, New Zealand) marked her first collegiate goal and put Ohio ahead 3-1 with less than four minutes remaining in the game.

"It's a team game and everyone has a part in scoring the goals, whether you're in the back field or the front field," said Warren. "PCs [penalty corners] are certainly plays that we really work on in practice, so to be able to execute those in games is really exciting."

Up next, Ohio hits the road and heads to Philadelphia to take on Drexel on Sunday, September 30 before resuming MAC play on Friday, October 5 against Ball State.

St. Francis 2, Kent State 1
Box Score
KENT, Ohio – The Kent State University field hockey team's effort fell short in a 2-1 loss to Saint Francis University. Gridlocked until the 55th minute, the Flashes responded to back-to-back Red Flash goals with a goal by freshman Sydney Carr, her second of the season.

The first half featured a defensive battle between the two teams as the game remained scoreless heading into halftime. The Flashes (2-9, 01 MAC) held Saint Francis (5-5, 2-0 A-10) to just 3 shots in the half, attacking the goal 8 times.

The stalemate ended in the second period with a flurry of goals in the 55th minute. The Red Flash struck first, going ahead 2-0 with back-to-back goals by Samantha Olton and Taylor Nesmith. Nesmith and Pagani recorded the assists.

The Flashes responded immediately with a goal by freshman Sydney Carr in the 57th minute. Sophomore Hailie Balachick fired a shot that was deflected into the net by Carr, bringing the score to 2-1.

The score remained despite a late offensive effort by the Flashes, as they drew four consecutive penalty corners following the Kent State goal that were well defended by Saint Francis. As the final seconds ran off the clock the Flashes drew a final penalty corner to decide the game. Sophomore Clara Rodriguez Seto inserted the ball and collected it back off a pass from the top of the shooting circle to take the game-tying shot, however the Saint Francis goalkeeper made a diving save to keep the game from going into overtime.

The Flashes held the advantage in shots, taking 20 attempts on the day. In addition to Carr's goal, junior Laila Richter led Kent State attack with 5 shots. In goal, junior Mary Crumlish tallied 5 saves for the Flashes.

The Flashes will return to action on Sept. 30, traveling to Longwood for a conference matchup at 12:00 p.m

Following a short stop on the field due to an injury, Indiana replaced its goalkeeper.
