Northern Iowa 2, Central Michigan 1
Box Score
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Jordan Rolli scored off a rebound just over seven minutes into overtime on Sunday as Northern Iowa handed Central Michigan a 2-1 loss in the Chippewas' final game of the Hawkeye Invitational.

The Chippewas, who opened the invitational with a 3-1 loss to host Iowa on Friday, are 1-4.

"I thought we came out and played well," CMU coach Peter McGahey said. "Overtime games are always difficult at this level, Sunday games are always difficult."

HOW IT HAPPENED
It didn't take long for the Chippewas to find the back of the net as Shannon Magnan scored just 19 minutes into the game, giving CMU a 1-0 advantage. Sarah Mitchell picked up the assist. It was Magnan's second goal of the season.

The Chippewas held the lead for nearly 60 minutes before Northern Iowa evened the match in the 78th minute.

"I thought today the team responded well and worked through the back end of a tournament against a very good Northern Iowa team," McGahey said. "You have to give credit as Northern Iowa took advantage of their chances in the second half and overtime today. Unfortunately, we just came out on the short end of it today."

Toledo 2, IUPUI 0
Box Score
Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo women's soccer team (3-1-1) won 2-0 today in the Rockets' home opener against IUPUI (1-4-0). Toledo's goals were scored by senior Natalie Knauf and sophomore Alex Troy, and both were registered in the first half.

The Rockets also celebrated their eight seniors as part of an early-season Senior Day prior to the match. Shelby Gillespie, Jamie Peters, Katie Wilson, Natalie Knauf, Kelsey Kraft, Alena Sidwell, Hannah Scafaria and Regan Price were all honored before kickoff.

"I thought they played outstanding," head coach TJ Buchholz said. "The conditions were hot and we told them they had to keep their energy levels up for 90 minutes. We did that really well and got a lot of people into the game to secure the win. I'm proud of our overall effort, and especially the defense for getting the shutout. I thought IUPUI was a really strong attacking team and our girls did a really good job today."

The match started off as a defensive battle between the two sides, with the Rockets unable to break through the defense for much of the opening 10 minutes.

Toledo got on the board in the 14th minute thanks to a penalty kick. Senior captain Hannah Scafaria was taken down in the box during a run in, and Knauf was elected to take the chance. The senior placed it past IUPUI's Sophia Lipka to put Toledo up 1-0 and record her first goal of the year.

The Jaguars almost responded in the 20th minute when they won their own penalty kick. Miranda Ricks stepped up for IUPUI but senior goalkeeper Katie Wilson made the save to keep Toledo ahead.

The Rockets followed the attempt with a series of shots from Scafaria and sophomore Sophia Lewis that just couldn't find the back of the net.

Toledo's second point came in the 36th minute from Troy. The sophomore received the ball down low from Lewis and was able to dribble past the keeper for an open net shot, earning her second of the season.

Toledo parked the bus in the second half and was largely able to keep the Jaguars away from the top of the 18-yard box.

Knauf sent two corners in for Toledo early on but neither was able to turn into a real opportunity. Toledo kept the pressure on though, with the Rockets recording seven more shots before time expired.

Up Next
Up next for Toledo is a mid-week showdown against Detroit Mercy. The Rockets host the Titans at 4:00 p.m. on Sept. 6 at Scott Park.

Ohio 3, Marshall 1
Box Score
ATHENS, Ohio— The Ohio soccer team (2-3-1) continued their home stand Sunday (Sept. 2) against Marshall (1-3-1), and through warm, humid conditions and a couple of water breaks, the Bobcats would come out on top, 3-1.

"To be able to put it in the back of the net, because I only scored in an exhibition game last year, so to finally net one Friday and then come out today, it was just an amazing feeling." Sarina Dirrig (Powell, Ohio) said after the match. "It wasn't even me, my teammates were setting me up perfectly, I get the credit for the goal, but it was everybody who helped me."

"I think we learned a lot from Friday's game. We definitely took what we needed to after the NKU game and applied it to today, and definitely got the positive result." Head coach Aaron Rodgers commented.

Ohio would bring strong offensive pressure from the start, as Jenni Santacaterina (Geneva, Ill.) would net her first career goal in the eighth minute, assisted by Sydney Leckie (Medina, Ohio) and Bryce Hueber (Cincinnati, Ohio), that was a cross in front of the net and fired to the left of Marshall's keeper.

Ohio would continue to be aggressive, with shots in the next few minutes of action from Abby Townsend (Powell, Ohio), Leckie, and Hueber all registering shots.

Marshall would score the equalizer in the 29thminute, with Jayne Lawman netting one past Sydney Malham (Nashville, Tenn.) on a cross to the upper corner of the net.

After a few minutes of both teams looking to make something happen, Alivia Milesky (Plain City, Ohio) would try and find an opening in the 33rdminute with a header that went wide.

Paige Knorr (Cincinnati, Ohio) would get a good look in the 42ndminute that resulted in a non-goalie save from Marshall defense and was followed by an Ohio corner and another shot from Knorr that was saved by the goal keeper.

At the half, the Bobcats and Thundering Herd would remain tied 1-1. Ohio registered nine shots with one goal. Leckie and Knorr each had two shots and Santacaterina recorded Ohio's lone goal. In net, Malham would allow one goal and make one save through the first 45 minutes.
The Bobcats started off the second half with a corner kick in the 45thminute from Townsend that Ohio was unable to capitalize on. Ohio offense continued their push early in the second where Leckie would register a shot on goal in the 47thminute, that was saved by the keeper.

Leckie would stand out offensively, pushing towards Marshall's net, but strong defense from the Thundering Herd stopped her pursuits in the middle of the second half.

Townsend would sustain the hard-offensive push in the 58thminute with a shot on goal that was narrowly saved by the goal keeper. A Marshall corner saw a shot go high and hit the crossbar in the 64thminute with both teams desperate to take control of the game.
Dirrig continued her outstanding weekend when she scored the goal that would put Ohio back in the lead 2-1 in the 79thminute of action.
Shortly after, in the 84thminute, Madelyn Kah (Hamilton, Ohio) netted her second goal of the season off an assist by Knorr that went left of the goal keeper and solidified Ohio's 3-1 win over the Thundering Herd.

Overall, Ohio registered 24 shots, 14 of them being shots on goal. In goal, Malham grabbed two saves and allowed one goal during her 90 minutes of action.

The Bobcats hit the road Friday (Sept. 7) when they take on Cleveland State in Cleveland, Ohio. First touch is set for 7 p.m. The Bobcats will then return to Athens on Sunday, Sept. 9 when Ohio hosts Wright State at 1 p.m. in their nonconference finale.

Box Score
AKRON, Ohio – Freshman Sydney Worthy (Groveport, Ohio) dazzled the crowd at FirstEnergy Stadium with her first career hat trick as the forward led the way for the Akron women's soccer team to a dominating 6-0 win over Youngstown State on Sunday afternoon.

Worthy's hat trick against the Penguins was the fifth in program history which puts her tied for first in goals scored in a single contest. The Zips scored five goals in the second half of play which is also tied for the most goals scored in a single half in program history. The last time it was accomplished was in 2003 against Youngstown State. The six goals scored by Akron are the most tallied in a single-game by the Zips squad since it was last done in 2008 against Pittsburgh.

Akron dominated the ball in both the offensive and defensive halves of the field against the Penguins. The Zips took the offensive advantage in shots with a 16-differential (20-to-4), including an 11-to-3 advantage in shots on goal. Defensively, Akron held YSU to one shot in the first half before allowing three in the second period, however not one shot would get past the Akron keepers.

In the contest, the Zips totaled a season-high 20 shots against the Penguins with 11 shots coming on goal. A trio of Zips players in the lineup registered four shots in the match including senior Rachel Baughman (Alliance, Ohio), sophomore Abigail Brown (Batavia, Ohio), and Worthy. An additional four Akron players each tallied at least one shot in the match.

Freshman Bella Henderson (St. Peters, Mo.) made her third start in the goal for Akron. In 73' of play, Henderson did not face a shot. At the 72:54 mark of the second stanza redshirt junior Samara Yurchak (Leola, Pa.) entered the match for the Zips and went on to grab three saves.

Baughman started the offensive frenzy for the Zips and tallied her second goal of the season at the 15:10 mark of the first half. Senior Erica Schrader (Blacklick, Ohio) possessed the ball in the left side of the box. Schrader made a quick turn around her defender and headed towards the net. Baughman came sprinting down the middle of the box and Schrader sent a picture-perfect pass to her teammate setting up the score. Schrader earned her first assist of the season on the play.

Holding a 10-1 shot advantage and dominating possession in the first half, Akron took the 1-0 lead with them into the locker room.

After the whistle blew signaling the start of the second half, the Akron offense began to pour in. Worthy scored three unanswered goals over the span of a 20-minute period. The freshman forward scored her first collegiate goal just two minutes into the second half. In the 51' of play, goal number two for the young Zip followed after sophomore Ryley Watt (Irwin, Pa.) sent a perfect pass off a free kick into the box and the speedy Worthy poked it in with her right foot as the keeper came out to make a play. The hat trick for Worthy was capped off after she took advantage of a YSU turnover in the box and fired a shot into the back of the net for goal number three.

The Akron offense did not stop there as Schrader got in the goal column with her first of the year courtesy of a penalty kick after the Penguins were whistled for a foul inside the box.

Sophomore Lexie Kolano (Trafford, Pa.) joined in on the scoring party in the 80' as the end result of a dynamic string of passes. Sophomore Eliese LaCourt (Rockford, Mich.) placed the ball into the box to Baughman, the Zips forward made one touch to Kolano, and the sophomore finished off the play with her first goal in an Akron uniform.

The Zips notched six assists in the contest, including a game-high and career-high two assists from Watt. LaCourt, Baughman, Schrader, and Kolano all garnered their first respective assists of the 2018 season.

Akron now prepares for a five-game road swing spanning over the next two weeks which includes the final three non-conference matches and opens the 2018 Mid-American Conference season. The Zips sights are first set on a trip to southwest Ohio as Akron takes on Dayton (Sept. 7) and Xavier (Sept. 9).

Miami 2, Evansville 1
Box Score
OXFORD, Ohio – Lydia Brosnahan and Kristina DeMarco scored 47 seconds apart to lift the Miami soccer team to a 2-1 comeback victory over Evansville on Sunday afternoon.

The RedHawks (2-2-1) extend their unbeaten streak to three games after posting their second-straight victory.

Early possession favored the Red & White, but a second minute miscue near the MU net left Montana Potenier with a wide-open net to tap the ball into and give the Purple Aces (2-4) a 1-0 lead.

The RedHawks poured on shots and had several dangerous chances in the early going. Lyda Bogdanovitch flicked a corner kick service a bit high in the 11th minute, Bianca Medancic was a hair late on a footrace to a loose ball with the keeper, which drove her wide without an angle to the net and an early Chloe Masys header went just over the net. Miami had decided advantages in both shots (8-3) and corner kicks (5-1) in the first half, but went to the break still trailing by a goal.

Miami kept the heat on and struck like lightning with two goals 47 seconds apart in the 51st minute of play. A corner kick service by Jordan King was perfectly placed to the waiting head of Brosnahan and the redirect took a high hop and went in to tie the score up. In the blink of an eye, Miami took the lead by forcing an Evansville turnover that set up Soph Spinell for a run to the right flank. The sophomore broke down her mark and played another well-placed cross to a cutting DeMarco, who headed home her first collegiate goal from point blank range to put the RedHawks in front 2-1.

"I challenged the team to put back to back good performances together," head coach Courtney Sirmans said. "Sundays are hard because you played a game a couple days ago and they aren't pretty. Winning on Sunday is all about grit. We created a lot of opportunities in the first half, but didn't bury them. In the second half, we put them away and were able to put Evansville on their heels and take control of the game."

Trailing for the first time, the Purple Aces mounted their most sustained attack of the day and outshot the RedHawks by a 10-6 margin. Patricia Koutoulas made three stops during the half and Miami got a few more set piece opportunities as the contest wore on. Brosnahan got a clean header on another corner kick in the 79th minute, but the bid went over the net. King also nearly gave MU some insurance in the 87th minute when she hammered a service from a sharp angle into the box that eluded UE keeper Michaela Till, but rang off the post and stayed out. The lack of breathing room didn't end up mattering as Miami managed to salt away the remaining few minutes by keeping the ball in the attacking third to pull off the win.

The RedHawks finished the afternoon with a 14-13 shot advantage and a 9-5 lead in corner kicks. Koutoulas made all three of her saves in the second half to pick up her second-straight win while Till stopped three of the five shots that came her way.

Miami is on the road for the rest of its non-conference slate and is back in action on Sunday when it takes on Lipscomb. Opening kick is at 2 p.m. ET.

UTEP 1, Northern Illinois 0
Box Score
EL PASO, Texas -- The Northern Illinois University women's soccer team played UTEP even into double overtime until a penalty kick in the 102nd minute gave the Miners a 1-0 victory over the Huskies on Sunday night at University Field.

"Obviously we are all disappointed with the result, but the body of work throughout the game was the best that I have seen us play," said NIU head coach Julie Colhoff. "Every game I have talked about, 'have we been able to execute?' and I think today from the starting whistle, it was an unfortunate way to end, but I was pleased with the performance we put out."

NIU (0-5) went on the attack right from the opening kickoff as freshman Kylee Hermeyer (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) sent a shot wide in just the second minute. Five minutes later, sophomore Amanda Czerniak (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) has a shot saved by UTEP goalkeeper Alyssa Palacios and Czerniak sent another shot just wide in the ninth minute.

The Huskies continued to control the early play as junior Jennie Nailor (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) forced a save from Palacios in the 14th minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Donnally (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) was called into action for the first time in the contest just after the half-hour mark, stopping a shot from Jodie Enokson. The Huskie goalkeeper made another save on a shot by Nicole Pugsley just a minute before halftime as the contest went to the interval scoreless.

Both teams created opportunities early in the second 45 minutes as Donnally and Palacios were each credited with a save inside the opening five minutes of the second half.

In the 68th minute, junior Abby Gregg (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) had an opportunity for the Huskies, but her effort was stopped by the Miner goalkeeper.

With just less than 10 minutes to play in regulation time, Donnally made a pair of stops to keep the match level before the Huskies had a pair of chances off corner kicks, the first from senior Delaney Loprieno (Algonquin, Ill./Huntley) was saved by Palacios and the second, a header from sophomore Haley Hoppe (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic), went wide.

In the extra session, Czerniak had an effort blocked in the 94th minute and April Pate for UTEP had a shot stopped by Donnally in the 95th as the first 10 minute overtime was still not enough to settle the contest.

Within the first minute of the second overtime period, UTEP (4-2) had a shot from Natalie Valentine blocked. Less than a minute later, the Huskies were whistled for a foul in the box and Lauren Crenshaw stepped up and scored the penalty to give UTEP the victory.

Donnally made 10 saves in goal for the Huskies; Palacios recorded five stops for the Miners.

"One of the things I was pleased with was that everybody contributed today," said Colhoff. "We didn't get the result but people stepped up. Whether that was with their performance, people that didn't play minutes with the way they carried themselves in the warm-up. I was the most pleased I have been since we started preseason with the performance."

NIU will return home on Friday, Sept. 7, as the Huskies host Green Bay at 6 p.m. The contest will be the opening game of a doubleheader with the NIU men's soccer team following against Purdue Fort Wayne.
