CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A first half goal from Virginia freshman Jaquelyne Wilkins and a shutout performance from Carrera Lucas led the seventh-ranked ACC powerhouse Cavaliers past a defensive-minded Longwood team 2-0 Sunday afternoon at the Turf Field.

The Lancers gave a Virginia team that has won at least 15 games in the last three seasons while playing in the powerhouse ACC all it could handle with a dynamic 12-save performance from Katie Wyman spurred by a stout effort from the Longwood back line. The performance saw the Lancers hold the Cavaliers to their lowest scoring total against an unranked team at home since a 2-1 win over Liberty in 2016.

The loss for Longwood (1-1) marks the first of the season for the Lancers against a Virginia (2-1) team that has won two of its first three games of the season, with its only defeat coming at the hands of No. 6 Penn State.

"That was a really good performance from our team on a lot of fronts," said Longwood head coach Iain Byers. "UVA is obviously a very solid team, so to keep it as tight as we did, we were happy. We're really proud of what we did in a lot of respects, and we have a lot to build off of."

Wyman, who was an All-MAC performer in 2017, was part of a stout defensive effort for the Lancers, holding a high-scoring Virginia attack that averages 4.0 goals a game to two goals while making a career-high 12 saves on 26 shots.

She was aided by the backline group of Luna Lopez, Rio Weber, Kolbey Donahue, Clara Meschini that was part of an effort that blocked eight shots.

"This was a complete defensive performance," Byers said. "I know we gave up a number of shots, but it was a well-controlled game throughout and we were in it from the start. Katie Wyman made some great saves to keep us in the game."

However, it was Virginia goalkeeper Lucas who finished with the shutout, being credited with five saves on eight Longwood shots.

Virginia freshman Jaquelyne Wilkins broke the scoreless first half with a goal in the 15th minute on a three-on-one play, beating Wyman off a feed from Izzy McDonough.

After that goal, the Longwood defense was able to withstand pressure before Grace Walls added an insurance goal with her third of the season to increase Virginia's lead to 2-0 in the 65th minute, scoring off a penalty corner on a play that was setup by Erin Shanahan.

Leonie Verstraite led the Lancers with a team-high five shots and three on goal.

The Lancers return to the Athletics Complex Thursday, Sept. 6, welcoming UC Davis for the start of a two-game home stand. First touch is set for 5 p.m.

The Hawkeyes got off to a strong offensive start after Sophie Sunderland scored Iowa's first goal in the first two minutes of action.  Sunderland would strike again at the 10:40 mark in the first half along with goals from teammates Makenna Grewe and Ryley Miller.  Iowa's strong offense continued at the net in the second half as the Hawkeyes would strike three more times before the end of regulation.

Ball State didn't end the contest empty handed though, as redshirt sophomore Sierra Jefferson scored her first goal of the season and fourth of her career.  Redshirt junior Michelle Shampton was awarded the assist on Jefferson's goal.  Shampton led the squad with three shot attempts on the day.

PHILADELPHIA – The Central Michigan field hockey team was outshot 14-3 on Sunday in dropping a 3-0 nonconference game at La Salle.

The Chippewas (1-2) and Exploers (2-0) play again on Monday (11 a.m.).

"It was a frustrating game for the team," CMU coach Catherine Ostoich said. "At the end of the day we did not make adjustments and we did not follow the game plan.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chippewas fell in an early hole, allowing goals at the 9:13 and the 21:21 marks. La Salle added an insurance goal midway through the second half.

"We called a timeout in the middle of the first half because they were breaking our press," Ostoich said. "We talked about it at halftime, but we were just never able to make those changes."

Appalachian State 4, Rider University 3

BOONE, N.C. -- Friederike Stegen netted the deciding goal in overtime to cap off a 4-3 comeback in a wild Sunday afternoon at Adcock Field.

Appalachian (3-1) trailed Rider (1-2) with less than three minutes remaining in regulation before sophomore Veerle Van Heertum found the back of the net on a penalty corner. Rider's Tess Coorens picked up a yellow card in the 63rd minute, giving the Mountaineers the advantage they needed to find the game-tying goal.

"We just wanted to have some patience," head coach Meghan Dawson said. "When they called the timeout we were just talking about how we've got enough time. When they got that card, it helped our situation."

In overtime, Appalachian dialed up the pressure, not allowing Rider to take control of possession. On a breakaway, Stegen utilized a spin move to open up a space for her to smash home the golden goal.

The Laatzen, Germany, native's pair of goals this season have proven to be game winners.

"We were just passing and trying to lead ahead, and the group worked together," Dawson said. "It's not just something where you send one. You want everyone to go together and try to earn something."

The Black and Gold struck first early in the first half. Junior Ali Williams tapped in sophomore Meghan Smart's shot off of a penalty corner in the fourth minute to put Appalachian up 1-0.

Rider responded in the 18th minute with a goal of its own off of a penalty corner, where sophomore Marion Waterkeyn made the final touch. Shortly after Waterkeyn's goal, the game entered a rain delay with the score tied 1-1.

Over two hours passed during the delay, but the Broncs came out firing, netting a goal just four minutes before the end of the first half. Rider then extended its lead to 3-1 early in the second half before the Mountaineers began their comeback.

Smart brought the game within one goal in the 44th minute off of a penalty corner with sophomore Chloe Bell picking up her first of two assists. Bell's next assist came on the game-tying goal off of yet another penalty corner.

The Mountaineers tallied more shots than Rider in both halves and in overtime, finishing with a 16-9 advantage. Appalachian also recorded an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners, where the Mountaineers cashed in for three goals.

Four different players scored goals for the Black and Gold, which is the second-straight game where Appalachian has had a different scorer for each goal.

With the pair of weekend victories, Appalachian completed its first weekend sweep at home since October 2015, where the Black and Gold knocked off St. Louis and Davidson in Boone.

"This was huge for us to prove to ourselves that we're coming together," Dawson said. "We're a young group, and it's a great way for us to move forward."

The Mountaineers now hit the road for the first time in 2018 with four games away from Adcock Field. Appalachian opens its road trip with Davidson on Friday at 7 p.m. The game is available to watch by streaming on ESPN .

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Miami University field hockey team fell to California by a 1-0 margin on Sunday. The RedHawks drop to a 3-2 record on the season while the Golden Bears improve to a 2-1 record.

"I believe that we were able to control the game for most of the first and second half," said Maddie Passarella. "During the second half we really picked up our press and started playing more with each other. I believe we fought hard for this game and it was a tough finish. From here as a team we are finding the takeaways from this game."

The majority of the first half was played at midfield where the teams battled for possession. This was reflected on the scoreboard as the game was scoreless at the half with each team earning two penalty corners and taking two shots.

Miami came out strong in the second half, running down the field to earn a penalty corner less than two minutes in and firing off a couple of shots.

The RedHawks started to gain possession and spend some time inside of California's 25 around the 46th minute of play. After another penalty corner chance and a wide shot, California called timeout to regroup.

After the timeout, California made a push, earning a pair of penalty corners before Miami could regain control and create its own push.

With just under 11 minutes to play, the Golden Bears stole the ball from the RedHawks' offense and sent a long pass up the field. Passarella stopped the initial shot before California scored on the rebound.

Miami created pressure but the California defense prevented any more dangerous chances.

The RedHawks led the game in shots (9-6) and corners (5-4). Passarella recorded two saves. Paula Portugal led both teams with five shots, three of them on goal.

Miami plays at No. 12 Northwestern on Friday at 1 p.m. ET.
