Rochester, Mich. - The Toledo women's soccer team (4-3-1) ended the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 1-0 road victory over Horizon League opponent Oakland (0-9-0) today. The Rockets' goal was scored by freshmen Ashton Cassel and it was her first of the year.

"Today's win was very important," Cassel said. "Conference play is coming up and we need to set ourselves up to continue winning."

The win comes following Toledo's back-to-back losses against Detroit Mercy (2-1, Sept. 6) and Illinois State (2-1, Sept. 14).

"We've had a lot of good opportunities in front of goal recently and it just hasn't been going our way," Buchholz said. "Today, our girls kept fighting to the end. In order to win games you have to make plays and fight, and our team did that so I'm proud of them.  I'm proud of the team effort today and especially our defense. It was an awesome shutout today."

Toledo started the day hot, with the Rockets quickly putting a couple shots on goal thanks to senior captain Hannah Scafaria. Scafaria had three attempts in the first 11 minutes but the Golden Grizzlies' defense worked hard to fight off each shot and build into counter attacks.

Oakland opened a dangerous opportunity in the 14th minute but junior Rachelle Topolewski slid in at the last minute to make a huge block that kept things leveled at 0-0.

The 23rd minute saw sophomore goalkeeper Madison Perrin come up big, stretching out to make a save off Oakland's Sierra Grodsinsky. Oakland regathered and shot in another one that bounced safely off the near post. Minutes later, Oakland's Hollie Clement took a rip that beat Perrin but hit off the crossbar.

The Rockets pushed back hard but were unable to get anything in the net before halftime.

The second half started off right where the first left off. Toledo held possession and worked to build chances in the attacking third, but was largely kept to the outer edges of the 18-yard box.

Freshmen Betsy Lueck found room to the left of the goal in the 78th minute and sent in a laser, but Oakland goalkeeper Jaimie Leas cradled the opportunity.

Toledo finally got on the board with two minutes left to play in the match. Senior Natalie Knauf kicked up the ball in close to the Golden Grizzlies' net and Cassel fought her way up front, flicking in a header that soared over Leas. Oakland was unable to respond in the final minute, giving UT the win.

CMU (2-6) fell to UIC, 1-0, in its final nonconference game. The Chippewas open Mid-American Conference play on Friday (6 p.m.) against Ohio at the CMU Soccer Stadium.

AMHERST, Mass. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team had its win streak snapped by the UMass Sunday, Sept. 16, at Rudd Field. The Eagles (5-4) could not keep pace with the Minutewomen (5-2), bringing their four-game streak to a close with a 6-1 defeat.

The Minutewomen scored in the 25th, 48th, and 51st, minutes to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the opening minutes of the second period.

With an extremely young XI on the field that featured four freshman, six sophomores, and a junior, the Eagles' offense broke through. Freshman Emma Collins (Windsor, Ontario-St. Anne) drew a foul in front of the EMU bench and fellow freshman Kylie Frantz (Erie, Pa.-Villa Maria Academy) delivered a perfect service to the middle of the 18 where sophomore Marla Cobetto (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton) headed it in.

UMass did not let up, adding goals in the 83rd, 87th, and 90th minutes to down EMU, 6-1.

Eastern now turns its focus to Mid-American Conference play. The Eagles begin the MAC season at home next weekend, Sept. 21-23, starting with a Friday evening match against Kent State University. Kickoff between EMU and KSU is slated for 5 p.m. at Scicluna Field.

CINCINNATI – The Miami soccer team renewed its in-state rivalry with Xavier on Sunday night, but a pair of goals late in the first half sent the RedHawks to a 2-0 setback on the road.

MU finishes its non-conference slate with a 2-4-1 mark.

"Great credit to Xavier, they scored two fantastic goals," head coach Courtney Sirmans said. "We need to be more offensive minded. I thought we made adjustments in the second half and got a little more on the attack and didn't give up another goal. Moving forward, it's about conference play and starting a brand new season. We're excited to get back to the basics this week. I have all the faith in the world this team will show up."

Xavier (6-4) created the first good opportunity right away as Grace Brauer got fed through for a close range shot that Patricia Koutoulas made a diving stop on to keep it scoreless.

Persistent XU possession eventually yielded a goal in the 30th minute as Samantha Dewey found a loose ball that was deflected off a handful of defenders and found the far post from about 15 yards out. The Musketeers outshot the RedHawks 12-1 in the first half and got another goal from Grace Bahr off a close-range free kick 30 seconds before the break to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

The Red & White attempted to push numbers forward in the second half and did register four more shot attempts, but the Musketeers still kept play heavily in their attacking third and prevented the RedHawks from cracking the scoreboard.

Xavier finished with a 28-5 shot advantage, forcing Koutoulas into making 11 stops while Toni Bizzarro made one save for a shutout.

"Pat had a fantastic game," Sirmans said. "She kept us in the game and made some great saves. Her distribution in the back helps us on offense too. It was important for her to have a good performance coming off the Lipscomb game."

Miami begins Mid-American Conference play on Friday against Bowling Green. Opening kick at Miami Soccer Field is at 4 p.m.
