KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's soccer team earned its third consecutive victory with a 2-0 shutout over the University of Maryland, Baltimore County on Saturday, Sept. 15 at WMU Soccer Complex.
The Broncos improve their overall record to 4-4 on the season while tallying at least two goals for a fourth-straight game.
"A complete 90-minute performance today from the men," said head coach Chad Wiseman. "I am very proud of them. Our leaders are really starting to step up, it is great to see."
A fairly even first 45 minutes left the scoreboard reading 0-0 heading into the break. WMU held a slight advantage in both shots (7-6) and corner kicks (7-3).
At the 53rd minute mark of the second half, the Broncos had created their best chance of the game, with a penalty kick. A Kosti Moni shot inside the UMBC box was blocked with a handball to force the PK. Moni, who scored twice already previously on PK's, was robbed by UMBC goalkeeper Ciaran O'Loughlin to keep the score at 0-0.
In the final 12 minutes, Western Michigan scored twice, four minutes apart. WMU got on the board at 78' as Zack Shanecapitalized with his first collegiate goal. Paul Liagre and Jake DeJulio received the assists.
Soon after, the home team put together a great play to go up 2-0. Anthony Bowie received a pass from Dejuilio prior to tapping ahead a nice ball to Tommy Clark past the UMBC defense, who then chipped the ball over the keeper for his first goal of the season. Dejulio's two assists stands as a career-high.
"Congratulations to Zack on his first Bronco goal, and to Lucas for his first shutout. UMBC is a solid team and they really compete. That is a great win for us at home," Wiseman concluded.
Making his fifth-straight start in net, freshman goalkeeper Lukas Von Lienen improved his record to 3-1 while earning his first collegiate shutout. The Bronco defensive unit can take some credit, limiting the Retrievers to just one shot on goal.
Up next, Western Michigan heads to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay on Wednesday, Sept. 19. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. (ET).

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (September 15, 2018) – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team won its fourth consecutive non-conference home match with a 3-1 victory against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Saturday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers (3-3) took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute and added a goal on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute to extend their lead to 2-0. Eight minutes later, in the 71st minute, West Virginia made it 3-0 before the Red Flash (3-3) scored their lone goal in the 86th minute.
Senior forward Rushawn Larmond scored WVU’s first and third goals, recording his first multi-goal game of his career, while senior midfielder Joey Piatczyc converted on the penalty kick for his first career game-winning goal.
With the two points on the game-winning goal, Piatczyc has 15 game-winning points in his career, tied for eighth-most in program history.
“Today, we were able to finish,” LeBlanc said. “I still think, at the end of the day, there’s more goals in us. I think there needs to be more goals in us, but it definitely feels good to get back in the winning side of things. We’re a good team; I’ve said that before. I think we’re still going to win a lot of games, but for me, it’s about the little things and the little details. We’re close, but we’re not where I want us to be just yet. When we get to where I want us to be, we’re really going to be firing.”
Junior defender Ryan Kellogg and sophomore goalkeeper Steven Tekesky earned assists on Larmond’s first goal. Tekesky’s assist was the first of his career.
In goal, Tekesky made one save, as the WVU defense held SFU to just three shots, two on goal. The Mountaineers had 10 shots, five on goal.
The Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead at 36:06. The play began with Tekesky, who sent a long ball past midfield from under pressure inside the box. His ball was headed further up the field by Kellogg, to a chasing Larmond. From 25 yards out, Larmond’s first touch was a shot on goal that bounced past SFU’s diving keeper.
West Virginia extended its lead to 2-0 at 62:50 thanks to Piatczyc’s penalty kick goal.
WVU’s third goal came at 70:20, again off the foot of Larmond. On a long ball into the box, the Red Flash keeper attempted to punch the ball out, but the ball went right to Larmond, who was just inside the box, 15 yards out. Larmond made contact, and sent a caroming ball in that bounced off the turf twice and in off the leg of a Saint Francis defender.
SFU avoided the shutout when Gabriel Castro scored at 85:28. Leonardo Ribeiro earned an assist.
Tekesky’s lone save, and the only save made by either keeper in the first half, came in the 11th minute, when he made an easy stop on a header.
WVU had three shots in the first half, with junior defender Albert Andres-Llop and sophomore forward Tsubasa Takada sending shots wide and high, respectively, to go along with Larmond’s goal.
In the second half, the Mountaineers had seven of their 10 shots in the contest.
Junior defender Pascal Derwaritsch opened the second half with a shot that was saved in the 47th minute, while WVU had three more shots go wide in the next 11 minutes. Following Piatczyc’s goal, Takada had a shot saved in the 66th minute.
In the 79th minute, with West Virginia leading 3-0, Larmond and SFU’s Colin Serredszum were shown red cards, and both teams played the final 11 minutes with 10 players.
The Red Flash scored in the 86th minute, on the only shot by either team in the final 20 minutes of play.
Loyola 2, SIUE 0
Box Score
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Loyola scored a pair of goals in a 54-second span of the first half and went on to knock off SIUE 2-0 at Korte Stadium.
The loss snapped SIUE's five-game unbeaten streak and dropped the Cougars to 4-1-1. Prior to Loyola's goals, SIUE had not given up a goal in more than 650 minutes.
"It's a great lesson not only in soccer but in life," SIUE Head Coach Mario Sanchez said. "From the first whistle you have to be ready to go. Full credit to Loyola, I thought they did a great job. They jumped all over us. At the end of the day if you don't play 90 minutes that can happen. Hopefully we learn from it and move forward."
Aidan Megally put Loyola on the board after he was tripped inside the box and awarded a penalty kick. Megally converted to put the Ramblers up 1-0.
Fabian Lifka made it 2-0 less than a minute later. Lifka capitalized on a giveaway by the SIUE defense in the box and connected for his first goal of the year.
SIUE took over following the early let down. The Cougars had three scoring chances within minutes of one another. Jorge Gonzalez unleashed a pair of shots on goal that were turned away by Loyola goalkeeper Josh Lagudah. Lagudah knocked down Gonzalez's second shot from just 12 yards away and the rebound came out to Joergen Pettersen at the top of the box. Pettersen fired a shot right on that also was saved by Lagudah.
The Cougars outshot the Ramblers 10-3 the rest of the way in the first half and then 10-1 in the second half, but couldn't find a goal. The 20 shots on goal were a season high for the Cougars. Eight of their shots were on target-the second most in a game this year.
Gonzlez led the way with six shots. Lachlan McLean and Keegan McHugh each had four shots.
"We've all been around it, soccer is funny," Sanchez said. "Sometimes you get just a handful (of chances) and you score one. Other games like tonight we had 20-something shots, and good opportunities and we can't get a goal. But you have to get the shutout. If you're not scoring goals you have to get the shutout."
Lagudah did earn the shutout for Loyola making eight saves.
SIUE next plays on the road at Saint Louis Friday night. The match is the first regular season meeting between the two schools since 1995.
"We have to get back at it and get ready for a big game next Friday night," Sanchez added. "We have time to train and refocus. I know the guys will learn from this. I cannot wait to play next Friday night in the Bronze Boot."
