The University of Akron volleyball team picked up a 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-14) win over Youngstown State on Friday night at James A. Rhodes Arena to open up the Zips Invitational. Akron improved to 7-3, while Youngstown State fell to 6-6.

After falling behind 2-1 in the match, the Ball State women's volleyball team opened the fourth set with a 13-1 run and pulled out a thrilling 3-2 (20-25, 25-13, 20-25, 25-18, 15-11) come-from-behind victory over UMBC Friday afternoon in its first match of the Tiger Invitational hosted by Towson.

The University at Buffalo volleyball team opened the weekend at the American Volleyball Classic with a bang as the Bulls swept the host team 3-0, hitting .360 on the evening. UB took the contest 25-19, 25-23, 25-14, as the Bulls improved to 7-3 on the year. The Bulls rushed out to an early 8-2 run in the first set, which was capped off on three straight service aces from sophomore Andrea Mitrovic. The Bulls extended their lead in the first set to 15-4 following an ace from Polina Prokudina before American made a late run, pulling within 23-18. UB was able to close out the set following a kill from Kristina Nieves, giving Buffalo the 1-0 lead in the match.

Facing one of the nation's best, the Central Michigan volleyball opened the Husker Invite on Friday with a loss to defending-national champion Nebraska, the host team. The Chippewas followed with a loss to Missouri State. The Chippewas (3-8) lost to the fourth-ranked Cornhuskers, 25-18, 25-15, 25-11 and then dropped a 25-14, 25-15, 25-21 decision to Missouri State.

The Kent State volleyball team lost its opening match at the Bulldog Brawl, 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 23-25, 14-25), to Santa Clara on Friday afternoon. The Golden Flashes (6-6) made some strong swings to start the match and posted 16 kills and a .325 hitting percentage in the first set. However, Kent State's hitting percentage dropped each set and finished the match at .181.
