ATHENS, Ohio— After a scoreless game well into the second half, the Ohio field hockey team (2-4, 1-0) defeated the Appalachian State (4-4, 0-1) 1-0 today at Pruitt Field in the first conference match up of the season.
This victory marks the second win of the season, the opening of MAC play and a successful rebound from a few large losses.
"The last few previous games we've just been bumped off the ball," said head coach Ali Johnstone. "This game is physical so I told them to get a little bit lower so you don't end up on the ground every single time."
Ohio dominated in the first half, registering two more shots on goal than Appalachian State. After three corners apiece and 35 minutes of play, the game remained even.
During the beginning of the second half, the Bobcats forced two more corners before sophomore midfielder Jillian Shive(Lebanon, Ohio) changed the game. In the 49th minute, Shive scored, pulling the Bobcats ahead and scoring for the sixth time this season.
"We were able to come back in the second half and start working more as a team and settle down more so we weren't as frantic," said Shive. "It came down to passing as teammates and that's what got us the goal."
With five minutes remaining, Appalachian State pulled their goalie, putting 11 players in the field. This calculated risk didn't pay off; time ran off before Appalachian State could score.
Next week, the Bobcats return to Pruitt Field on Thursday, September 20 to face off against UC Davis. Then on Sunday, September 23, MAC play resumes when the Ohio field hockey team plays Central Michigan at home.

STOCKTON, California – The Kent State University field hockey team (2-6) lost 2-0 in a tough battle with the University of the Pacific (5-3) Friday afternoon in California. The Tigers' two goals in the first half proved to be enough as the Flashes shut out Pacific in the second half.
The Pacific Tigers struck first midway through the first period, as Tayler Silacci tapped it in the net following a diving save by junior goalkeeper Mary Crumlish. In the 25th minute, the Tigers added a second goal by Kriekie van Wyk, her seventh of the season.
In a highly defensive second period, zero goals were scored, and the Flashes held Pacific to just 2 shots. On the day, the Tigers out-shot Kent State 9-5 and recorded 6 penalty corner opportunities.
Offensively for the Flashes, sophomore Clara Rodriguez Setó, freshman Helena Cambra Soler, and senior Courtney Weise each took 2 shots, both on goal. In the cage, Crumlish tallied 3 saves.
Up next, the Flashes will wrap up the cross-country trip, facing No. 23 Stanford on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 3:00 p.m. EST/12:00 p.m. PST.
