BOONE, N.C. -- Appalachian State University field hockey (2-1) scored a trio of goals in each half during a dominant 6-3 victory over LIU Brooklyn (0-3) at Adcock Field Friday night.
Six different Mountaineers recorded goals on the night, and Appalachian never trailed in its 6-3 victory. App tallied 20 shots, including 14 shots on goal. Sophomore Chloe Bell opened the scoring onslaught with a goal in the 19th minute to put Appalachian up 1-0.
After trading goals to move the score to 2-1, the Black and Gold capitalized on a penalty corner at the end of the first half. Freshman Friederike Stegen inserted the ball before Bell set up sophomore Veerle Van Heertum for her first goal of the season, pushing the halftime advantage to 3-1.
"Being able to score three goals in a half was a really big confidence boost for us," head coach Meghan Dawson said. "It was important to change the tide because we had dominated and then they came back and scored a great goal, so we showed ourselves that we could fight back and earn that goal back."
The Mountaineers piled on in the second half, rattling off three more goals in the first 10 minutes of the half. Sophomore Meghan Smart began the second-half blitz, notching her first goal of the season off of another penalty corner.
Junior Melissa Nobile and freshman Sydney Lee scored the final two Mountaineers' goals. Lee assisted Nobile's first goal of the season. Nobile then returned the favor less than three minutes later, setting up Lee for her first goal in an Appalachian uniform.
Redshirt-freshman Madison Nuckols also made her first career appearance in net late in the second half. The Callands, Virginia, native made two saves in just over 17 minutes in the goal cage.
"It's really important for all of the team to get some minutes and just to have that experience," Dawson said. "It's fun because you can hear the girls on the sidelines cheering for each other. That just shows how deep the connection is between the girls and how important the team chemistry is to them."
The Mountaineers recorded assists on all six of their goals with Bell and Stegen each collecting two. Smart and Bell tied for the team lead in shots with three apiece.
Eva Van Wakeren scored twice for the visiting Blackbirds.
