AKRON, Ohio - University of Akron men's soccer sophomore David Egbo (Enugu, Nigeria) was honored on Monday, Aug. 27, by College Soccer News as a member of its Men's Soccer National Team of the Week.
Egbo turned in a breakout game in the Zips' season opener versus No. 9 Butler on Friday, Aug. 24, registering his first-ever multi-goal performance in a 2-2 double-overtime draw versus the Bulldogs. He finished the evening with two goals on the strength of a career-best five shots, including three on goal.
After Akron fell behind 1-0 early in the contest, Egbo nearly netted the equalizer in the 13th minute (12:52) as only a diving lunge from Butler defender Kieran Geldenhuys for a team save prevented the header from finding the back of the net.
Just over 10 minutes later, Egbo fired a laser into the goal off assists from senior Abdi Mohamed (Westerville, Ohio) and Joe Korb (Willowick, Ohio) for his first tally of the season at the 23:16 mark.
In the 44th minute (43:58), Egbo stepped to the line and gave the Zips a 2-1 lead with a successful penalty kick. The goal resulted in the first career multi-goal effort for Egbo, who recorded one goal as a freshman in 2017.
Egbo and the second-rated University of Akron men's soccer team continues it season-opening three-match homestand squaring off against No. 17 North Carolina State at FirstEnergy Stadium - Cub Cadet Field on Monday, Aug. 27. The 7 p.m. contest will be broadcast on ESPN+.
