OXFORD, Ohio – Miami ended the 2016 season with six consecutive wins and earned a bowl invitation to the St. Petersburg Bowl for a taste of football success for the heralded Miami football program. Last year’s 5-7 overall record, with a 4-4 mark in league play, was certainly a frustrating year for a program that had such high expectations. Those lofty expectations remain as Miami is anticipating a return to football success.

Miami head coach Chuck Martin is entering his fifth season leading the RedHawks program.  Miami returns 47 letterwinners from last year’s squad, including 19 starters (8 offense, 8 defense, 3 special teams). Miami opens the season with two home games as the RedHawks host Marshall on Sept. 1 and the rival game vs. Cincinnati on Sept. 8 at Paul Brown Stadium, home of the NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals, is a home game for Miami. The RedHawks travel to Minnesota on Sept. 15 and Army on Oct. 20.

Offensively, Miami’s returns eight starters, including all five starting offensive linemen from last year’s line:  right tackle Tommy Doyle (4 games), right guard Jarett LaRubbio (8 games), center Danny Godlevski (1 game, due to injury), left guard Sam McCollum (12 games) and left tackle Jordan Rigg (12 games). Junior quarterback Gus Ragland will navigate the offense after starting nine games last year with 2,032 yards and 19 touchdowns.  His main target is All-MAC First Team selection James Gardner, who posted 47 receptions for 927 yards and 11 touchdowns last year.

Defensively, linebackers Brad Koenig (102 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss) and Junior McMullen (57 tackles, 3 sacks) will lead Miami, while defensive tackle Doug Costin (48 tackles, 6 sacks), defensive end Pasquale Calcagno (35 tackles, 4 sacks) and defensive tackle Nate Trawick (31 tackles, 3 tackles for loss) will anchor the defensive line.  Junior safeties De’Andre Montgomery (62 tackles, 3 forced fumbles) and Josh Allen (53 tackles, 3 interceptions), along with junior defensive back Deondre Daniels (35 tackles, 8 passes defensed) will lead the secondary.
