Akron Runs Both Leaderboards after 2 Days of Competition

BUFFALO, N.Y. - With a total of 16 events completed at the 2018 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the Akron Zips hold the top spot on both their respective leaderboards.
 
The Zips started the day off strong with a 1-2 finish in the women’s heptathlon. Senior Jackie Siefring claimed her third straight title, setting a championship record with 5,688 points across the seven events. Siefring’s teammate Patricia Ortega claimed second with 5,285 points and BeJai Fray of Bowling Green claimed third with 4,883 points.
 
In men's decathlon, Kent State’s TJ Lawson added to his lead from day one to repeat as MAC Champ. The sophomore finished the ten events with a total of 7,032 points.Akron’s Malik Hudson earned a second-place finish with 6,723 and his teammate Brandon Hochbein rounded out the top three tallying 6,576 points.
 
Bowling Green’s Aliyah Gustafson defended her women’s shot put title from the indoor season with a loft of 17.52m (57-5 ¾). Akron’s Abigale Wilson took second with a throw of 16.00m (52-6) and Central Michigan’s Erin Howard claimed third at 15.82m (51-11).
 
Buffalo continues their dynasty in the men’s shot put. Senior Ryan Cribbin threw 18.29m(60-0 ¼)to claim UB’s ninth straight individual champion in the event.His teammate, Devon Patterson followed in second at 18.19m (59-8 ¼) and Central Michigan’s Kevin Weiler finished in third with a 17.72m (58-1 ¾) throw.
 
Western Michigan sophomore Gabby Collins claimed the women’s long jump crown with a leap of 6.16m (20-2 ½). Central Michigan’s Nadia Williams took second after jumping 6.10m (20-0) and Akron’s Jackie Siefring closed the top three with a 6.02m (19-9) jump.
 
On the men’s long jump, Akron’s Jordan Latimer and Terrell McClain placed 1-2 for the second-straight year. Latimer jumped 7.94m (26-0) while McClain leapt 7.84m (25-8 ¾). Kent State’s posted a 7.53m (24-8 ½) to round out the top three.
 
Alsu Bogdanova registered a 10:04.88 in the women’s 3000m steeplechase to take the title. Toledo’s Athena Welsh crossed in 10:14.33 to take second and Miami’s Alesha Vovk followed at 10:15.06 for third.
 
Eastern Michigan also took the top spot in the men’s 3000m steeplechase. Hlynur Andresson picked up his second title of the championship, finishing in 8:58.15. Miami claimed the 2-3 positions with Chris Torpy crossing in 9:02.38 and Jake Brumfield finishing in 9:03.09.
 
The final title of the day went to Akron’s Lucy Bryan in the women’s pole vault. The junior cleared a championship record 4.32m (14-2) to take the crown. Kent State’s Samantha Tollerud edged out Akron’s Eboni Hall and Jenna Frantz on attempts for second, clearing 4.12m (13-6 ¼). 
 
Preliminaries trials for short and mid-distance running events also took place throughout the day.
 
The final day of competition begins at 11:00 am on Saturday with the women’s discus, women’s high jump and men’s triple jump. At noon running events will commence with the 4x100m relay.
