Male Scholar Athlete of the Week: March 19th – March 26th
Toledo's Sam Shutes, Baseball (Senior, Civil Engineering, 3.850)
Senior Sam Shutes led the Rockets to their 3-0 victory at Western Michigan on Saturday. He tossed a career-high 8.1 shutout innings against the Broncos, striking out eight while allowing just five hits and one walk. It was the fifth start of Shutes’ career where he threw at least five shutout innings and the second in the last month (3/4 vs. Sacred Heart). Shutes is now 4-0 and tied atop the MAC for most wins. He is 3-0 with a 2.55 ERA in the month of March.
Female Scholar Athlete of the Week: March 19th – March 26th
Buffalo's Katherine Ups, Basketball (Senior, Biomedical Sciences, 3.923)
Senior Katherine Ups helped lead the Bulls to the best season in school history, capped off with the school’s first ever appearance in the Sweet 16. Ups started all three games in the NCAA Tournament, including in 20-point wins over South Florida and Florida State. Most recently, Ups picked up the start on Saturday in the Sweet Sixteen game against the defending national champions, South Carolina. Against one of the top teams in the SEC, Ups finished with two steals and pestered a Gamecock offense into 26 turnovers, their highest total of the year. The Bulls finished the year with a school-record 29 wins.
