MACON, Ga. – On day one of the Black and Orange Challenge hosted by Mercer University, the Akron softball team dropped a pair of contests to Mercer (5-1) and Radford (8-0) on Friday night in Macon, Ga. Akron now stands at 1-10 on the season, while Mercer improved to 10-2 and Radford sits at 8-3.

GREENVILLE, N.C. - - It was a good Friday for the Ball State softball team, which opened the day with a 2-0 shutout victory over Canisius and capped the afternoon with a 4-1 come-from-behind win over ECU to open play in the ECU Pirate Invitational. The common denominator in both games, strong performances from the Cardinals (7-2) pitching staff. Combined, Ball State's pitchers allowed just one run, surrendered only 10 hits and struck out 13 batters over 14.0 innings of work. That equates to a 0.50 ERA and a .200 opponent's batting average on the day.

HAMPTON, VA – The University at Buffalo softball team (2-7, 0-0 MAC) opened their weekend at the Hampton Classic with a solid 8-3 victory over the Youngstown State Penguins on Friday afternoon at the Lady Pirates Softball Field. The Buffalo offense was able to produce 13 hits and six extra base hits in the victory on Friday. The Penguins were able to open the scoring in the first inning as they crossed a pair of runs across home plate as UB starting pitcher Ally Power struggled to find the strike zone. Youngstown State earned four walks in the inning and scored a pair of runs on wild pitches before Power settled down and struck out the side to get out of the jam.

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. –The Eastern Michigan University softball team used some late-game heroics Friday, Feb. 23, to pick up a pair of victories at the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational. The Eagles (2-5) used a walk-off single in the 11th inning to top Rhode Island (1-4), 4-3, before breaking a seventh inning tie to clip Manhattan (0-1) in the nightcap. Overall, it was day that the EMU pitching staff excelled with 18.0 innings of work with just one earned run surrendered. Meanwhile the EMU bats pounded out 14 hits while striking out just three times. Junior Brandice Olmos paced the offensive attack with a 3-for-6 day to go along with a RBI and a run scored.

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla – The Kent State (6-1) bats were sizzling under the hot Florida sun as the Golden Flashes swept the day defeating Delaware, 8-0, and Nicholls, 5-1. On the day, the Flashes scored 13 runs and banged out 23 hits. Kent State is on a six-game winning streak for the first time since 2016 and has recorded ten or more hits in five straight games.

Raleigh, N.C. – The Ohio softball team (5-2) returned to the diamond for the first day of the 2018 Homewood Suites Invitational hosted by NC State on Friday, Feb. 23, sweeping its two games of the day. In the first game, the Bobcats defeated Delaware State (0-5), 12-4, in five innings, and then returned later in the afternoon to defeat Wagner (0-1), 8-5, in nine innings.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.- The Western Michigan softball team split a pair of games on Friday to open play at the Chattanooga Frost Classic. The Broncos fell in game one 11-3 to Eastern Illinois and bounced back with a 1-0 afternoon win over Western Illinois. Senior outfielder Aspen Williams drove in all three Bronco runs in game one. She hit a two-run home run in the fourth and collected an RBI on a bases loaded groundball in the fifth. Her home run was her team-leading fourth of the year. Freshman Samantha Coffel and sophomore Mackenzie Swinehart each scored a run. The Broncos had four hits in the game. Coffel was 1-for-1 with a double and a pair of walks.
