MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES WRESTLER OF THE WEEK

Cameron Kelly, Ohio—Junior, Bellbrook, Ohio (Bellbrook High School)
 
Ohio junior Cameron Kelly added two wins to his 23-4 record on the season, starting with a big 9-3 decision win over No. 9 Josh Terao in Ohio’s battle with American University on Friday (Feb. 17). Kelly and Terao met earlier in the year at the Navy Classic in the 133 finals where Terao earned a 4-3 win after an evenly-matched battle. In their second meeting, however, Kelly maintained control throughout the match scoring first and leading 8-1 after three takedowns in two periods. Kelly continued his winning streak on the weekend with an impressive 16-1 technical fall win over Maryland’s Jhared Simmons.

Colin Heffernan, Central Michigan—Senior, Cleveland, Ohio (St. Edward High School)
 
Central Michigan senior Colin Heffernan knocked off No. 6 Alec Pantaleo of Michigan, 6-4, in overtime during the Chippewas’ nonconference dual meet loss to the fourth-ranked Wolverines on Sunday. His win over Panteleo came less than 24 hours after he finished 3-1 in the Lock Haven Open. Of Heffernan’s three victories at the open, two came via technical fall and the other by major decision. He improved to 16-5 on the season.
 
Caden McWhirter, Northern Illinois—Sophomore, Prattville, Ala. (Prattville High School)
 
Northern Illinois sophomore Caden McWhirter defeated Kent State’s Casey Sparkman, 7-2.  Earlier in the season, Sparkman defeated the fourth- ranked Mid-American Conference wrestler Colin Heffernan when Kent State defeated Central Michigan back on Feb. 11, 21-13. McWhirter has won three of this last four bouts and owns a 7-9 record this season including a team-leading six dual wins. McWhirter also has 44 career wins which is second on the team in wins only behind Alijah Jeffery, which has 65.
