SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The University of Akron men's soccer team will play for a national title after a five-goal explosion lifted the Zips (15-6-2) to a 5-1 victory over Michigan State (14-5-4) in the first semifinal of the College Cup on Friday, Dec. 7.
Akron will square off against the winner of the Indiana/Maryland match currently underway on Sunday, Dec. 9 in an 8 p.m. ET tilt on ESPNU.
The Zips garnered goals from sophomore David Egbo (Enugu, Nigeria), freshman Carlo Ritaccio (Westbury, N,Y.), redshirt junior Skye Harter (Copley, Ohio), junior Marcel Zajac(Mississauga, Ontario) and redshirt freshman Braden Petno (Hudson, Ohio) en route to posting the victory.
Akron was outshot on the evening, 13-12, with each side collecting seven shots on goal.
Senior goalkeeper Ben Lundt (Berlin, Germany) was stout in net for the Zips recording five saves, while senior Abdi Mohamed (Westerville, Ohio) cleared a ball off the line for a team save in the first half. Jimmy Hague made a pair of stops for the Spartans.
