Portugal Named Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-American

GILBERT, Ariz. — The Nation Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) announced Tuesday that Miami Field Hockey Senior Paula Portugal was named to the All-American First Team. Portugal was also named Offensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-American by Synapse Sports.

Teammates Mariona Heras was named Third Team All-American by Synapse Sports, along with Freshman midfielder/forward Noor Breedijk, who was named All-Rookie Team by Synapse Sports.

Portugal was recently named to the All-Region First Team for the second-straight season as well as being named MAC Offensive Player of the Year and All-MAC First Team in 2018. This year marked the second time Paula has been named MAC Player of the Year and fourth time she's been named to the All-MAC First Team.

Portugal started all 23 games this season and led the MAC in scoring for the second-straight season with 24 goals, five assists and 53 total points. She had career-highs in goals, points, shots and shots on goal. Portugal had three hat tricks this season. She wraps up her career ranked second in Miami field hockey history in goals (73) and points (171) and tied for fourth in assists (25).

The 2018 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-American teams are made up of 27 first-time honorees, 13 second-time honorees, seven third-time honorees and one student-athlete was recognized for the fourth time. The lone four-time honoree was University of Louisville goalkeeper Ayeisha McFerran, who finished her collegiate career with 20 shutouts and a 1.40 goals-against-average. Named All-Americans for the third time in their careers were Boston College's Frederique Haverhals and Ymke Rose Gote, Harvard University's Bente van Vlijmen, Penn State University's Moira Putsch, Saint Joseph's University's Anna Willocks, Syracuse University's Roos Weers and University of Delaware's Greta Nauck.
