MAC Announces Women's Soccer Postseason Awards
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Mid-American Conference announced its 2018 women's soccer All-MAC teams, its Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year on Thursday, as voted by the league's head coaches.
Bowling Green's Matt Fannon was named MAC Coach of the Year for the second time in as many seasons, while BGSU senior Erica Hubert was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Year. The hardware kept coming for the Falcons as junior Maureen Kennedy took home MAC Defensive Player of the Year honors. Ball State's Tatiana Mason earned Frehsman of the Year recognition.
Fannon has guided the Falcons to an overall record of 13-4-2, and a MAC record of 10-1-0. BGSU won the league regular-season title for just the second time in program history, and the Falcons' total of 10 conference wins set a new school record.
Hubert leads the Falcons in scoring, with 12 goals and 33 points this season to date, and she has nine assists to tie for the team lead. In MAC matches only she led the entire league in goals (eight), assists (seven) and points (23), and she also paced the conference in shots (5.20 per game) and shots on goal (3.20 per game). She ranks second on the BGSU career lists with 39 goals and 92 points.
Kennedy is fourth on the team with 17 points, and is tied for the BG lead with nine assists. In league games, she was second in the conference in assists, trailing only Hubert, and also was ranked among the top-10 players in the league in points. Three of her four goals on the season proved to be game-winning goals. Kennedy was named MAC Defensive Player of the Week three times in the month of October alone.
Ball State's Mason has put together a stellar freshman campaign to date, scoring six goals and tallying three assists for 15 points. Her six goals lead all freshmen in the MAC. The Ann Arbor native was particularly clutch late in games as she led all MAC players with five game winning goals for the year. Mason's 15 points lead Ball State on the year.
In addition, the All-MAC First Team & Second Team was announced, as well as the All-Freshman squad.
The MAC Women's Soccer Championship continues Friday at Bowling Green's Cochrane Soccer Stadium as No. 2 Ball State takes on No. 3 Western Michigan at 4 p.m. ET. No. 1 Bowling Green will face off against No. 4 Ohio at 7 p.m. ET. The winners of Friday's semifinals will play for the MAC Championship on Sunday, November 4th at 1:00 p.m.
