Female Scholar Athlete of the Week: October 8th – 14th, 2018

Bowling Green's Jessica Madry, Golf (Junior, 4.0, Biology)
Jessica Madry, a junior on the BGSU women's golf team from Houston, Texas, shot a 141 to break the 36-hole school record on her way to a three-stroke victory at the 2018 Shirley Spork Invitational (Oct. 8-9). Madry opened the tournament with a career-low 71, and then the following day, topped that career low by carding a final-round 70. Of the 62 golfers at the event, Madry was the only one to shoot below par, let alone three-under par. The junior led the entire field in birdies (8) and par-three scoring (2.63), as she became the 18th player in school history to earn an individual title. Bowling Green posted a school-record 592 to win the tournament, which included four other MAC schools, by 23 strokes.

Male Scholar Athlete of the Week: October 8th – 14th, 2018

Northern Illinois' Max Scharping, Football (Grad Student, 3.875, Exercise Physiology/Fitness Leadership)
Max Scharping anchored the NIU offensive line that allowed quarterback Marcus Childers to rush for a career-high 169 yards and a touchdown in NIU’s 24-21 win over Ohio on Saturday. The Huskies amassed a season-high 255 rushing yards and 400 yards of total offense in the win over the Bobcats, which moved NIU to 4-0 in the MAC. After Marcus Jones scored the go-ahead touchdown that put the Huskies ahead 22-21 with 4:51 to play, Scharping converted the two-point conversion when he ran in a lateral pass from Childers to make the score 24-21. It was NIU’s first successful two-point conversion since the 2011 season.
