Zac Carson, Eastern Michigan—Sophomore, Akron, Ohio (Lake High School)
Eastern Michigan sophomore Zac Carson had a big weekend, going 2-0 in two MAC duals. He started with a hard-earned 9-6 decision against Ohio on Jan. 5, before following that up with a pin against Old Dominion, on Jan. 7, in 3:26. It was his third pin of the season, and second in dual action. The Akron, Ohio native is now 13-9 on the season, as well as 6-3 in duals.
Additional Nominees:
Kyle Akins, Buffalo—Junior, Sycamore, Ill. (Sycamore High School)
Buffalo junior Kyle Akins helped Buffalo defeat Columbia, 25-13, with a first-period pin of Hunter Dusold. With the Bulls trailing 13-11, Akins’ pin put Buffalo ahead, 17-13, as it was Akins’ second pin of the season.
Drew Hildebrandt, Central Michigan—R-Freshman, Granger, Ind. (Penn High School)
Central Michigan redshirt freshman Drew Hildebrandt posted a 15-2 major-decision victory over Trevor Giallombardo, setting the tone for the Chippewas’ 29-9 MAC dual-meet victory over Ohio. The Chippewas extended their dual-meet win streak to four and improved to 2-0 in the MAC. It was Hildebrandt’s second major-decision victory of the season as he improved to 12-13.
Cameron Kelly, Ohio - Junior, Bellbrook, Ohio
Ohio junior Cameron Kelly is currently 16-3 after he picked up two wins during a weekend full of MAC competition. Kelly’s first win came in an 11-2 major decision over Noah Gosner of Eastern Michigan. Kelly would give up a couple escapes to Gosner, but the junior would hit a takedown and rides for nearly the whole third period, including getting a four-point near fall to add to his 11-2 major decision victory. In the match against Central Michigan, Kelly would come back in the last two periods from a 6-0 deficit with an escape and a takedown followed by a near fall to lessen Dresden Simon's lead. Kelly would make the ultimate comeback with a pin to earn an 8-6 comeback win over Simon.
Alex Madrigal, Old Dominion—Sophomore, Chicago, Ill.
Old Dominion sophomore Alex Madrigal is ranked No. 12 and won his bout over Eastern Michigan’s Sa’Derian Perry last Sunday. Madrigal wrestled after being out with an injury for the previous five weeks. After leading Perry for two periods, the Eagle scored multiple takedowns to come back in the final period. Overcoming a close call, Madrigal earned a 9-6 win over Perry to give the Monarchs three points, which helped in their 19-18 victory over MAC foe Eastern Michigan.
